Matty’s On the Five: Warriors win well, Blues too much for MP and the Rock brings ‘Hollywood’ to WWE

Matty’s On the Five is our weekly sports wrap highlighting five of the biggest moments in Pacific sport determined by Matt Manukuo.

When the Warriors win, I think it sets up the whole week to be a good one. It was another awesome weekend of sport this Easter break with a lot to look forward to as things continue to heat up in the sports world!

1. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Chanel Harris-Tavita influential in Warriors home win

When your third-string fullback takes the field, breaking ankles and raking in over 250 plus running meters, you know you have a good team. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck looked like he never skipped a beat in his first start at fullback for the side this year.

Speaking of broken ankles, a suspected broken leg to Luke Metcalf in the first 10 minutes saw club returnee Chanel Harris-Tavita step up for a 70 minute stint in the halves.

After the opening exchanges in the first 15 minutes, the Warriors scored two quick tries from Jackson Ford and Chanel Harris-Tavita. Ford was put over by a signature short ball from veteran half Shaun Johnson, while Harris-Tavita’s support line saw a clear way to the try line after a break from Wade Egan.

Chanel Harris-Tavita was also instrumental in the Warriors third try, putting a pinpoint kick to Marcelo Montoya to score in the start of the second half.

A penalty goal in the 71st was the nail in the coffin for the Warriors who ran away with the win 20 -12. They now move up to 10th on the NRL ladder.

2. Blues prove too much for Moana Pasifika in the 'battle of the 09’

It was a stunning occasion at Eden Park for another "battle of the 09" between Moana Pasifika and the Auckland Blues. Moana Pasifika were officially the home side at Eden Park for the first time ever.

The game was the conclusion of a week of celebrations for Pacific rugby, with the Pasifika Rugby Hall of Fame happening a few days earlier. So in keeping with the celebrations, Moana Pasifika donned a unique heritage jersey.

But, it was the Blues’ Pasifika players who did the damage against their Pacific brothers, as Samoan stars Mark Telea, Stephen Perofeta and Caleb Clarke scored highlight tries of their own. While Fijian powerhouse Hoskins Sotutu made a number of strong carries against the Moana forward pack.

Moana Pasifika showed brilliance of their own, with Lotu Inisi opening up the Blues edge defence making a break and putting Havili Talitui over for the sides only try of the match. The Blues were too strong for the home-side, winning 47 - 8.

3. Blues women claim first-ever victory against Chiefs Manawa

It seemed as if the Blues women had won the grand final when the fulltime whistle blew, as they secured their first ever game against the unbeaten Chiefs Manawa, 40 -28 at FMG Stadium in Hamilton.

The Blues struck first with forward Edora Itunu powering over the line, but the Manawa were quick to respond with Ruby Tui collecting a grubber kick from Holmes and scoring in the corner. The Blues scored another try off a strong maul, and were quick to march back down the field with some broken play brilliance.

An interference from Holmes saw a penalty try given to the Blues, followed by a yellow card for the Manawa fullback. Both sides scored another try each before half-time.

In the last ten minutes, it was a heavy back and forth, with both sides not giving an inch to the other. Blues forward Cheyenne Tuli-Fale powered over in the 77th minute putting a dagger on the game, shutting out the Chiefs tireless defense.

4. Fijian Drua power through the Western Force in rainy conditions

Torrential rain in Suva seemed to power the Fijian Drua, who stormed the field with their pre-game chant in front of a vibrant home crowd, as they proved too strong winning 31 - 13 against the Western Force.

Despite a shaky start from the Drua, letting in an early try from the Force, the home side's two wingers scored exciting tries on the edges diving across the wet and muddy trylines. Two penalty goals put the Drua ahead, before letting in another try at the end of the half.

A stand-out try came early in the second half, with Iosefo Masi chasing a kick and then sliding nearly ten meters in emphatic fashion to secure the points. A penalty try and conversion for the Drua put them in front 31 to 13, before kicking the ball into touch to close out the game in front of their passionate fans.

5. ‘Hollywood Rock’ returns for blood against Cody Rhodes

Everyone’s uncle Dwayne "the Rock" has drawn millions of eyes to the WWE in the lead up to this weekend’s Wrestlemania 40 event. His Versace singlets, cool shades and “final boss” nickname has restored the aura of “Hollywood Rock” made famous in the early 2000s.

The Rock also bought back his “Hollywood Rock” theme song in past episodes of Smackdown and Raw, as he continues his ill behaviour towards Cody Rhodes. In the latest episode of Raw, the Rock confronted Rhodes in the ring, walking staunch and whispering something to Rhodes.

Later in the show, cameras cut backstage to the Rock delivering a brutal beatdown to Rhodes throwing him against walls and across tables. The brawl ends up outside, where the rock continues beating Rhodes in the rain, talking down on him and even spitting on him.

Eventually, Rhodes starts bleeding, and the Rock takes a piece of Cody Rhodes merchandise and smears the blood of his opponent onto the piece. He then picks up Rhodes with his bloody face, and yells “this is what happens when you f*** with the final boss!” throwing him to the ground.

The Rock and Roman Reigns face Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins in night 1 of Wrestlemania 40 this weekend.

Matty’s Golden Point

Matty’s Golden Point is a point of advice shared every week on his segment ‘Overtime with Matty’ on the Pacific Grandstand Show on 531PI.

“Wins and losses come a dime a dozen. But effort? Nobody can judge that. Because effort is between you and you.”
